One of the biggest challenges I faced in scaling Ozzie Mowing & Gardening was ensuring consistent quality across multiple projects while expanding the team. As demand grew, it became clear that I couldn't manage every job myself, but finding team members who shared my commitment to detail and my understanding of horticultural principles wasn't easy. I realized that my years of experience and training had given me an intuitive sense of how to handle each plant, soil type, and seasonal change. However, this knowledge had to be passed on in a way that was both practical and accessible to new team members. To address this, I developed a thorough onboarding process where each employee not only received hands-on training but also gained insight into the "why" behind our methods. By focusing on educating them in the principles I'd studied in horticulture and practiced in the field, I was able to create a team that understood our standard of care and shared my vision.
Beyond training, my certification as a horticulturist and years of practical experience were essential in building trust with clients as the team grew. Clients knew that even though I might not be on-site for every job, the standards they had come to expect would be upheld. I also implemented regular check-ins and quality assessments, allowing me to monitor projects and provide feedback to the team, reinforcing the expertise they'd gained. This approach allowed us to maintain our reputation for quality service, which was essential for sustaining growth without compromising what made Ozzie Mowing & Gardening successful in the first place. Today, that initial investment in team training and quality control has enabled us to handle larger projects and maintain long-term client relationships.
