Javid Javdani, Entrepreneur & Pharmacist, Balboa Market
Javid, welcome to Venturz! To start us off, could you tell our readers a little bit about yourself and your journey in the world of health and entrepreneurship?
Thank you! My journey began in healthcare, where I worked as a pharmacist for nearly two decades. Over time, I realized I wanted to connect with people in a way that extended beyond prescriptions and treatments.
That led me to transition into entrepreneurship, starting with an international food market. It allowed me to merge my passion for health, community, and cultural exchange while addressing food as a cornerstone of wellness.
What were some of the pivotal moments in your career that led you to where you are today?
One major moment was recognizing that the principles I applied in pharmacy—precision, care, and customer engagement—could be adapted to running a business. Another pivotal experience was when I purchased a small grocery store. I saw its potential to not only provide quality products but also become a hub for cultural and nutritional awareness, which was transformative for my career.
Can you share a story about a significant challenge you faced while building your business in the health sector, and the key lesson you learned from that experience?
When I transitioned to running the market, sourcing authentic, high-quality products was a huge challenge. Building trust with suppliers took time and effort. I learned that perseverance and attention to detail are crucial. Ensuring quality wasn't just about the products; it extended to building relationships with customers and delivering on their trust.
What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs who are passionate about making a difference in the health and wellness space?
Start by understanding the specific needs of your target audience. Innovation is important, but practicality and authenticity matter just as much. Build something meaningful by staying true to your values and by being adaptable as the industry evolves.
From your experience, how important is building a strong team when it comes to creating a successful health-focused venture?
It's everything. A strong team not only supports the business but also enhances its impact. You need people who share your vision and bring their unique strengths. In a field like health, trust and collaboration within the team directly translate to the trust customers place in your brand.
Many entrepreneurs talk about the importance of 'finding your niche.' How would you advise someone in the health space to identify their unique value proposition?
Your niche is where your passion meets a clear need. In health, this might mean addressing a gap in access, affordability, or education. Listen to your audience and look for ways to add value that others aren’t offering.
The health landscape is constantly evolving. How do you stay ahead of the curve and adapt your business to new trends and technologies?
Staying informed is key. I keep an eye on industry reports, attend relevant events, and listen to customer feedback. Trends like plant-based eating or clean-label products don’t just reflect fads; they represent shifting values. Adapting to these changes while maintaining your core principles keeps you ahead.
What role do you believe entrepreneurship plays in shaping the future of health and wellness?
Entrepreneurs are catalysts for change. They identify inefficiencies, innovate solutions, and make health and wellness more accessible. Whether it’s through technology, product development, or education, entrepreneurs drive progress.
Finally, what's your biggest piece of advice for staying motivated and resilient on the entrepreneurial journey, especially in a demanding field like health?
Focus on your “why.” Challenges will come, but if your mission is clear, it's easier to navigate setbacks. Celebrate small wins along the way, and remember that resilience often stems from the impact you're making.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and expertise. Is there anything else you'd like to add?
Only this: stay curious, stay adaptable, and never underestimate the value of building genuine connections—with your team, your customers, and your community. That’s where true growth happens.
